Midterm Exam #1

 

Take home exam is due in class on Wednesday, March 2.

                                                                    

Your exam consists of a short paper of about 5 typewritten pages (double-spaced) in length. It should be written clearly and concisely, and developed logically with evidence or examples to support your statements. When citing evidence or an example be sure to explain how it supports your point. Do not use direct quotes; paraphrase and cite the source of your information. And be sure to answer all parts of the question.

- Review your handout on Guidelines for Writing Exams.

- This is not a research assignment – you are to use only class readings and lectures which provide sufficient material to answer the questions.

- Cheating and plagiarism (using the words or ideas of others as if they were your own) will not be tolerated.

- You are responsible to keep a copy of all work submitted to the instructor. 

 

Questions: Choose two articles from Part I and one question from Part II and answer all parts.

 

I. Choose two articles and answer the questions at the end of each. (30% of exam grade)

3. The Uruk Vase (p. 46)

 

4. Royal Inscriptions from Early Mesopotamia (p, 49)

 

5. The Palette of Narmer (p. 64)

 

6. The Pyramid Builders of the Pharaohs (pp. 66-67)

 

II. Choose one Question (A or B) and answer all parts (70% of exam grade).

 

A. Mesopotamian and Egyptian Civilizations

Answer the following questions taking into consideration your textbook readings, class handouts and lectures. Support your answers with evidence and examples.

 

1. Settled agricultural societies emerged in both Southwest Asia and Egypt between 3200 and 3000 B.C.E. Compare and contrast the following aspects of Sumer and Egyptian civilizations.

> Political organization

> Relation between ruling elites and subjects

> Religious beliefs

 

Note: Question 1 calls for a compare and contrast analysis so you will have three paragraphs with your thesis statement in the topic sentence as shown below followed by evidence or examples.

Paragraph 1: The political organization of Sumer and Egypt was similar as both _____________.

Paragraph 2: The political organization of Sumer and Egypt was different as Sumer ___________ while Egypt  ____________.

 

2. What geographical factors may have contributed to the cultural outlook and development of the Sumerian people? Give examples to support your answer.

 

3. What geographical factors may have contributed to the cultural outlook and development of the Egyptian people? Give examples to support your answer.

                                                                                                             

B. Women in Patriarchal Societies

Answer the following questions taking into consideration your textbook readings, class handouts and lectures. Support your answers with evidence and examples.

 

1. Define patriarchy; identify and explain three factors that may have contributed to the rise of patriarchy in agricultural societies?

 

2. In what ways did women’s legal, marital and economic status decline in Mesopotamia from the early city-states of Sumer to the later Assyrian Empire?

Note: Question 2 calls for a contrast analysis so you will have three paragraphs with your thesis statement in the topic sentence followed by evidence or examples.

For example:

Women’s legal status declined from ____________________  under Sumerian rule to  ________________ under the  Assyrian Empire.

 

3. Identify three different ways women raised in the patriarchal societies of early Mesopotamia and Egypt reacted to their conditions and give specific examples of individual women to support your answers.
