Through the Lycos  "References"  link, you can search dictionaries, almanacs, encyclopedias, thesauri, and many other library reference sources. 789 dictionaries, covering a wide array of subjects, are posted here including the American Heritage Dictionary.  A search of the American Heritage presents  a brief dictionary definition of the target word.

At this Cambridge University Press site, you can search any of the following dictionaries: Cambridge International Dictionary of English, Cambridge Dictionary of American English, Cambridge International Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs or Cambridge Dictionary of Idioms.  This site also includes three or four "vocabulary activities of the day."

The word search at this site provides extensive explanations of each one of a word's multiple meanings, in addition to including spelling, pronunciation and word origin.
