Track & Field: Warriors Take Home Six Medals at State Championships

The Warriors women’s team headed into the state championships at San Mateo last week with a young team looking to make some big strides as the season came to a close. Although the Warriors failed to win a state title this year, the squad comprised of mostly freshmen gained valuable experience with a solid showing as they placed 19th in a field of 38 teams with fellow South Coast Conference resident Cerritos taking the state title.

Ruby Davis kicked things off for the Warriors, gaining the team’s first medal of the competition by placing eighth in the long jump with a mark of 17-5. Davis continued to pace the Warriors on day two with another medal and eighth place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 35-9.

Araya Dixon just missed a medal in her first event, the 100m, as she placed ninth (12.32). But the butterflies were out of her system by the time the 200m rolled...(read more)


W. Tennis: Young-Shin, Van Kanegan Receive ITA Awards

A few weeks after winning the South Coast Conference women’s player of the year and coach of the year, sophomore Chun Young-Shin and Warriors head coach Steve Van Kanegan added a couple of more trophies when they were named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) regional women’s sophomore player of the year and regional women’s head coach of the year respectively.

The ITA is the governing body of college tennis and oversees both men’s and women’s tennis at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels along with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the junior/community college level. It is comprised of nearly 1,700 men’s and women’s coaches representing more than 1,200 institutions across the country.

AOTY: Diaz, Salami Named ECC Athletes of the Year

Another year of El Camino College athletics nears its conclusion and the cream of the Warriors crop has been selected. Freshman swimmer Jonathan Diaz and sophomore softball player Olufunmike “Aisha” Salami have been named as the ECC male and female athletes of the year.

The two athletes were recognized on May 10 at the ECC Golf Classic. Diaz helped the Warriors win the first South Coast Conference championship in school history as he was undefeated in the 500 yard freestyle throughout the season, securing the conference title in the event. He would go on to finish fifth in the event at the state championships but he did not walk away from the competition empty handed as he scored the state championship in the 400 yard individual medley.

26th Annual El Camino Golf Classic a Big Hit

The members of the El Camino College community got to show off their golf game, or lack thereof in some instances, in the 26th Annual El Camino College Golf Classic at Los Verdes Golf Course in Palos Verdes on May 10. More than 130 players hit the links for a chance at bragging rights as they all got a chance to test their mettle with putting and longest drive contests along with a closest to the pin competition and culminating with 18 holes of golf.

The story was not just about the players as many members of the El Camino College community volunteered their services to help the event run as smoothly as ever. Those members included but were not limited to:

Badminton: Belandres Finishes Second at SCC Individual Championships

The Warriors entered the South Coast Conference Individual Championships last week ranked No. 2 out of the four teams thanks to sophomore Corrine Belandres’ excellent season in singles matches.
