Warriors Comeback Falls Short, Eliminated By Santa Ana

WHITTIER, Calif. – The SoCal No. 9 Warriors dug themselves a big hole in the first inning in their game against SoCal No. 3 Santa Ana and could not recover, falling 9-6 to the Dons Saturday afternoon in a California Community College Baseball Super Regional Playoffs elimination game at Rio Hondo College.

It was the second time the Dons (33-8) beat the Warriors (30-11) in as many days. They plated four runs in the first inning off Warriors starter Alex Mistuloff and never surrendered the lead. The offensive barrage matched the most earned runs Mistuloff had given up in an entire game all season.

Mistuloff went five innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, with four walks and three strikeouts.

Shortstop Trevor Magno led off the game with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. He came around to score on an RBI-single to center by outfielder Dylan Jones, but not without controversy.

Warriors’ center-fielder Ronnie Galosic fired a perfect throw that beat Magno to the plate, forcing the Dons’ shortstop to slide to the right of the plate in an effort to evade the tag attempt from catcher Marvin Flores. Magno glided past the plate, but doubled back and slammed his right hand on the plate after the home-plate umpire Chuck Hare ruled Flores missed the tag. The Dons went on to add three more runs on two more hits in the inning.

The Warriors chipped away at the lead with one in the third and then cut the deficit to one with two in the fourth, but the Dons got a three-run homerun from Jones to regain their four-run cushion at 7-3.

It stayed that way until the seventh when the Warriors refused to roll over. With two outs and one on, second baseman Brice Savage legged out an infield single, barely beating out the throw from third baseman Adrian Garcia. After a brief argument from the Dons’ dugout, third baseman Cole Trezek came up and unleashed a mammoth swing to drive a fastball over the left-field wall to cut the deficit to 7-6.

It was Trezek’s only hit of the game while Savage finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Dons responded to the Warriors outburst the way they had throughout their two games, by scoring in the very next at bat. The Dons tacked on two runs in the eighth to push their lead back to 9-6 and, despite putting two runners on in the ninth, the Warriors could not overcome the deficit.

The Dons will go on to face Rio Hondo on Sunday, needing to beat the Roadrunners twice to advance while the Warriors finish the season three wins shy of reaching the state final four for the second time in three years.

Warriors Hold On To Eliminate Riverside

GLENDORA, Calif. – It was not easy and it definitely was not pretty, but the SoCal No. 9 Warriors held on to eliminate No. 10 Riverside 6-4 Saturday morning at Citrus College the first elimination game of the California Community College Baseball Super Regional Playoffs.

Left-fielder Daniel Timmerman went 2-for-3 with two RBI and shortstop Atlee Schwab also tallied two hits with one RBI to pace the Warriors (30-10) offense to help starter Rafael Ramirez secure his ninth victory of the year and keep the team’s playoff hopes alive.

The Warriors took a 5-0 lead after three innings, powered by a three-run second inning in which they sent seven men to the plate and cashing in a Tigers (20-21) error.

They needed every inch of that five-run cushion as the usually stellar Ramirez struggled with his control throughout his seven innings of work. He walked a season-high six batters and surrendered seven hits, but only gave up two runs, one earned.

The Tigers did not lack scoring opportunities as they loaded the bases in the second and third innings, each time with two outs. But shortstop Jake Middleton popped up in the second and Daniel Arrellano struck out in the third to end the threats. The Tigers stranded 15 runners on base, including the potential tying runs on first and second in the ninth inning.

Arrellano led off the ninth with a single for the Tigers off Warriors reliever Collin Nelson, but was erased when Elijah Briseno grounded into a double play. Then Jacob Rogers singled to short and Brad Burcoff walked, forcing the Warriors to bring in starter Alex Mistuloff to get the game-ending groundout to third base.

It was Mistuloff’s first relief appearance and save of the season. He went on to start the second game of the afternoon against Santa Ana.

Warriors Can't Solve Santa Ana In Super Regionals Opener

WHITTIER, Calif. – The No. 9 Warriors allowed seven runs after recording two outs throughout their Super Regionals opener and it proved to be their downfall, dropping a 9-3 decision to No. 3 Santa Ana Friday afternoon at Rio Hondo.

The Warriors will face the loser of the afternoon game between No. 10 Riverside and No. 2 Rio Hondo in an elimination game Saturday at 10 a.m. at Citrus College.

Catcher Marvin Flores went 3-for-4 with a run scored and the Warriors (29-10) had eight hits but their inability to get off the field on defense proved to be their downfall.

It all began in the first inning when Warriors starter Drew Freeman got the first two outs in the inning, but center fielder singled after a 10-pitch at bat to start a rally. He advanced to second and third on wild pitches and designated hitter Tyler Madrid worked a walk in an 11-pitch at-bat. Catcher Konnor Armijo then laced a double down the left field line to drive in both baserunners and put the Dons (32-7) up 2-0 early.

Freeman went seven innings and allowed six runs on 12 hits and walked four with one strikeout.

After the Dons added a run in the third, the Warriors offense finally responded with a three-run fifth inning to tie the game. Outfielder Ronnie Galosic started the rally with a one-out single through the left side and Flores followed by poking a single to right field. Shortstop Atlee Schwab walked to load the bases and then left-fielder Daniel Timmerman lined an RBI-single to left to put the Warriors on the board. Luke Klocek followed with a walk to bring in a second run and then designated hitter Pete Ives reached on a fielding error by shortstop Trevor Magno, allowing Schwab to bring in the tying run.

The Warriors failed to take the lead thanks to a strike out and fly out to end the inning. The Dons then responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. The Warriors had a chance to tie the game again in the sixth inning, getting runners on second and third with two outs but Timmerman struck out to end the threat.

Timmerman finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and Klocek, Ives and second baseman Brice Savage each went 1-for-4.

After a one-year absence, the Warriors will return to the Southern California Super Regionals after sweeping Southwestern on the road in the first round of the playoffs.

In the first game, the Warriors came firing out of the gates with a four-run first inning. They went on to score eight runs on 11 hits en route to an 8-6 victory. Starter Alex Mistuloff continued his stellar form, allowing three runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.

In the second game, the Warriors’ calling card this season was on display again as they got magnificent pitching from freshman Rafael Ramirez. He allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts on his way to a complete-game victory as the Warriors advanced, 4-1.

The Warriors will have to continue to play well as they will face No. 3 Santa Ana on Friday in their first game of the double-elimination Super Regionals at Rio Hondo College. The Dons enter with one of the most potent offenses in the state, ranking third in runs scored (281), while the Warriors are ranked third in ERA (2.13). The winner will take on the victor of the game between host and No. 2 seed Rio Hondo and No. 10 Riverside while the losers will play an elimination game.

Seven Warriors Named All-SCC As Team Preps For Playoffs

May 3, 2012

L Klocek

Starting pitcher Alex Mistuloff earned his second consecutive All-South Coast Conference First Team selection this year as he went 4-3 in conference with a 1.61 ERA in 56 innings pitched, including four complete games. He struck out 37 batters in SCC play, good for eighth in the conference.

Mistuloff was one of seven Warriors named to the All-SCC team this week and one of three Warriors on the First Team. For the season, Mistuloff won nine games (T-5th in the state), and fanned 75 batters (11th in state) and had a 1.74 ERA (28th in state).

Joining Mistuloff on the All-SCC first team are second baseman Brice Savage and outfielder Luke Klocek. Savage hit .324 in SCC play and his .344 overall batting average was tops on the team. He smacked six doubles and two triples along with two home runs in conference play and boasted a nearly flawless .991 fielding percentage. He led the team in overall batting average (.344), slugging percentage (.533), on base percentage (.445), runs batted in (28), doubles (9) and triples (4).

Klocek was a nomad in the Warriors lineup, hitting everywhere from the leadoff spot to the no. 8 hole. No matter where he hit, Klocek produced, especially in SCC action where he hit .342 in 21 conference games, tops on the team. He made a habit of getting on base, piling up a .451 on-base percentage in SCC games and walked 11 times. This was Klocek’s second selection to the All-SCC team, receiving a second team nod last season.

Overall, Klocek is third on the team with 13 multi-hit games and tied for second on the team in multi-RBI games with seven. At one point this season, Klocek reached base in 16 consecutive games, a team-high. He had a six-game hit streak earlier this season and will be riding a current five-game streak into the playoffs this weekend.

Starting pitchers Drew Freeman (2-2, 1.86 ERA, 1CG, 53.1 IP, 41 K in SCC) and Rafael Ramirez (3-2, 2.12 ERA, 1 SH, 51 IP, 47 K in SCC), reliever Collin Nelson (3-0, 0.00 ERA, 8 IP, 2 SV in SCC), and third baseman Cole Trezek (.299 BA, 2 triples, 3 HR, 10 RBI in SCC) were all selected to the All-SCC Second Team.

Sophomore Ronnie Galosic and freshmen Daniel Timmerman and Austin Watters were named honorable mention.

The selections come as the Warriors prepare to make their return to the Southern California Regional Playoffs this week against Southwestern after a one-year absence. The team advanced to the state Final Four in 2010, where they lost to eventual state champion Ohlone College and runner-up San Mateo respectively.

This year’s Warriors possesses one of the top pitching staffs in the state, with their collective 2.06 ERA ranked behind only Orange Coast College, a team currently ranked as the No. 1 JC team in the nation. The best-of-three series against Southwestern begins Saturday at 1 p.m., with game two scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday and decisive game three scheduled to begin 30 minutes after game two if necessary.

Warriors Rout Pasadena In Last Regular Season Home Game

TORRANCE, Calif. – Luke Klocek went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Brice Savage hit an inside-the-park home run in the So Cal No. 7 Warriors final regular season home game as they pounded Pasadena 11-0 Thursday at Warrior Field.

Freshman Rafael Ramirez scattered four hits and struck out six in seven shutout innings to earn his seventh victory of the year. Grant Wessel struck out the side in the top of the 8th and Sean Isaac took care of the 9th to close out the game.

With the victory over the Lancers (6-29, 4-16), the Warriors (26-9, 13-7) stay in control of their playoff destiny as they hold the tiebreaker over ECC Compton Center for third place in the SCC. If the Warriors win their final game Friday at Pasadena or ECC Compton loses one of their last two games, the Warriors would clinch third place and they would likely receive an at-large bid into next week’s playoffs due to their strength of schedule and overall record. If the Warriors win Friday and East Los Angeles loses their last two games, the Warriors would clinch second place in the conference and would be guaranteed a playoff berth.

The game was close through four innings, with the Warriors leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th, but that’s when the Warriors offense came to life. Klocek (West Torrance) led off with a single up the middle and Savage (El Segundo) followed that with a double over the left fielder Damian Santamaria. Third baseman Cole Trezek (Palos Verdes) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.

After a pop up to short, center fielder Ronnie Galosic poked a single to right field to drive in two runs and open the flood gates. The Warriors went on to score five in the inning on five hits to take a 6-0 lead. They tacked on three runs in the 6th, started by Savage’s inside-the-park homer to left, and then two in the 7th to put the game away. The Warriors pounded out 13 hits on the afternoon.

Savage finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI and Trezek scored two runs. Freshman Justin McCullough (El Segundo) was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and Daniel Timmerman (West Torrance) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

For the Lancers, six different players had singles and first baseman David Halstead was the only player to get on base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk.

Warriors Capitalize On Errors In Win Over Long Beach

(Box Score)

TORRANCE, Calif. – Third baseman Cole Trezek laced a fastball down the right field line to drive in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 9th as the Warriors escaped with a 5-4 South Coast Conference victory over Long Beach Tuesday at Warrior Field.

It was the only RBI credited to the Warriors (23-8, 10-6), who scored the majority of their runs thanks to errors by the Vikings (15-15, 9-7). They scored four runs on four Vikings errors in the bottom of the 3rd, all with two outs. The Vikings had seven errors in the game.

The win keeps the Warriors in second place in the SCC, two games behind Mt. San Antonio. Starting pitcher Drew Freeman surrendered just two runs on six hits through eight innings, but the Vikings solved him in the top of the 9th as they scored two runs on two hits and an error by Trezek to tie the game 4-4 and chase Freeman for his second straight no-decision. Reliever Collin Nelson came in and shut down the Vikings and earned his fourth victory of the year.

While Trezek’s error in the top of the 9th helped ignite the Vikings rally, he made up for it in the bottom half of the inning. After outfielder Luke Klocek reached on the seventh Vikings error, Trezek came up with a chance to move the runner over with a bunt. But with the count 1-1, reliever Javier Saenz spiked a curveball in the dirt, which allowed Klocek to advance into scoring position. Trezek then turned on Saenz’s 2-1 pitch and lined it down the right field line for the RBI single, his only hit in four at-bats.

Outfielder Ronnie Galosic went 2-for-3 for the Warriors with a run scored. For the Vikings, third baseman Justin Moore finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

The two teams will meet again Thursday at Long Beach with freshman Rafael Ramirez slated to get the start for the Warriors.

Mistuloff's Gem Puts Warriors In Second Place

April 14, 2012

A. Mistuloff

(Box Score)

TORRANCE, Calif. – One game after getting pounded 12-2 and dropping to third place in the South Coast Conference, the No. 9 Warriors got outstanding starting pitching from sophomore Alex Mistuloff en route to a 1-0 SCC win over No. 13 ECC Compton Center Saturday at Warrior Field.

The victory pulled the Warriors (22-8, 9-6) back into a tie for second place in the conference with the Tartars (17-13, 9-6) and gives them the edge in the head-to-head tiebreaker as they took two of three games in this week’s series.

Mistuloff was magnificent as he tossed his third complete game of the season and first shutout. He surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out a season-high 13 batters, including the last six batters he faced to secure the victory.

The Warriors needed every bit of that performance as their offense struggled again with just three hits. Luckily, all three hits came in the bottom of the 5th. Third baseman Cole Trezek led off the inning with a double to right-center. But Justin McCullough and Marvin Flores struck out and popped up, respectively, and the Warriors were on the verge of squandering their opportunity. But shortstop Atlee Schwab, making just his third start of the year, poked an RBI single to shallow right field to bring Trezek with the only run of the game.

Trezek finished the game 1-for-3 and leads the team with 37 hits this season. He is second on the team with a .325 batting average and .474 slugging percentage. His six doubles are also good for second on the team.

Mistuloff did the rest, keeping hitters off-balance with his wicked curveball. He also did a great job stranding the few baserunners he allowed. He pitched out of a two-on, no-out jam in the top of the fourth and also stranded two runners in the 2nd and 7th innings. With the shutout, Mistuloff pushed his ERA to an incredible 1.76 in 82 innings pitched this season.

There will be no rest for the Warriors as they start a three-game series against Long Beach, who is tied for third place in the SCC, on April 17 at Warrior Field.

Warriors Win Seventh Straight Game In Walk-Off Fashion

April 10, 2012

Walkoff

(Box Score)

TORRANCE, Calif. – Brice Savage singled to left field to bring in Ronnie Galosic from second base with the game-winning run as the Warriors defeated El Camino College Compton Center 4-3 Tuesday in a crucial South Coast Conference game at Warrior Field.

The Warriors (21-7, 8-5), ranked No. 9 in this week’s Southern California polls, have won seven games in a row and with the victory moved into a tie for second place in the SCC with the No. 13 Tartars (16-12, 8-5). Both teams trail Mt. San Antonio by three games for first place.

Starting pitcher Drew Freeman was spectacular for eight innings, allowing just one run on two hits and led 3-1 going into the top of the 9th. But he struggled in the final frame, allowing three hits and two runs and settled for a no-decision. He walked two and struck out nine in the game.

The Warriors came up empty in the bottom of the 9th but, after the Tartars went down quietly in the 10th, the Warriors put their first two runners on. Galosic hit a pop-fly single to right field that managed to drop between three Tartars players. Left fielder Johnny Palmer followed Galosic and laid down a sacrifice bunt to third, but Pablo Contreras could not field the ball cleanly and everyone was safe. That set the stage for Savage, who had already singled once in the game.

Savage showed bunt on the second pitch of the at-bat, but pulled it back and laced a 1-0 fastball through the hole on the left side of the infield. Galosic froze for a second and looked like he would only make it to third base on the hit, but left fielder David Stininger overran the ball and Galosic cruised home to give the Warriors the victory.

Savage finished the game 2-for-5 with a run scored while Galosic was 1-for-5 with a run scored. Austin Watters and Cole Trezek each finished the game 2-for-4 and outfielder Luke Klocek was 1-for-4, a two-run double in the first inning that gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Catcher Marvin Flores was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Trezek Collects Five Hits In Win Over Barstow

(Box Score)

TORRANCE, Calif. – Third baseman Cole Trezek (Palos Verdes) went 5-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored as the Warriors hammered Barstow 11-2 Tuesday in a nonconference game at Warrior Field.

Trezek, who raised his average to .292 with his perfect day at the plate, smacked two doubles and capped off a five-run bottom of the 4th when he found the right-center field gap to score outfielder Luke Klocek. The Warriors (19-7), who are ranked No. 11 in Southern California, entered that inning with just a 2-1 lead but, thanks five hits and one error expanded their lead to 7-1 and never looked back.

Klocek (West Torrance) finished the day 3-for-4 including two triples. He drove in two runs and scored three times. Catcher Marvin Flores (Torrance) chipped in with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored in four at-bats. As a team, the Warriors pounded out 16 hits and scored more than 10 runs for the seventh time this season. They are 7-0 when accomplishing that feat.

The Vikings (6-21) actually struck first, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Peter Lelich in the top of the 1st that brought in Jason Henderson after he reached third base on an error. It was the only blemish to an otherwise stellar outing for Warriors starter Rafael Ramirez.

The freshman out of Torrance High School earned his fifth victory of the year as he tossed six innings, surrendered two unearned runs on four hits and struck out seven. Reliever Michael Heredia (Redondo) shut the Vikings down the rest of the way, pitching three scoreless innings to earn his first save of the year. He did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out two.

The teams will close out their brief two-game series Thursday at Barstow before the Warriors get back to South Coast Conference action against second-place ECC Compton Center on April 10 at Warrior Field.

Flores Clutch Single Helps Warriors Walkoff Against Harbor

Walkoff

(Box Score)

TORRANCE, Calif. – Marvin Flores came up with a one-out, two RBI pinch-hit single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th to lead the Warriors to a 4-3 walkoff victory over rival L.A. Harbor Thursday in a South Coast Conference game at Warrior Field.

The Warriors (17-7, 6-5), who are ranked No. 11 in Southern California, loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th on reliever Jamaal Moore before Flores came up and lined a single over the outstretched arm of second baseman Anthony Villela to bring in Daniel Timmerman with the game-tying run and Luke Klocek right behind with the game-winner, who was mobbed by his teammates when he crossed home plate.

Flores started the season as the starting catcher but had struggled with the bat recently, hitting .208 coming into the season. But his 12th hit of the year was easily his biggest of the season. The victory moved the Warriors to within two games of second-place ECC Compton Center.

Starting pitcher Alex Mistuloff (6-2) pitched a complete game for the Warriors. He surrendered three unearned runs on five hits, walked five and struck out six. Catcher Justin McCullough was 2-for-3 and shortstop Pete Ives was 1-for-4 with a run scored.

The Warriors trailed for the majority of the game after the Seahawks (7-14, 3-8) pushed across two runs in the top of the 3rd thanks to a Warriors error, a stolen base and three singles. The Warriors cut the defecit in half in the bottom of the 4th when Ives came around to score from second on a throwing error by shortstop Kyle Demarco.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the 8th when left fielder Johnny Palmer laced a two-out double down the right field line to bring in Ronnie Galosic all the way from first base with the tying run. The celebration was short lived, however, as the Seahawks reclaimed the lead in the top of the 9th thanks to a two-out RBI single by Nolan Meadows, setting the stage for the dramatic bottom half of the inning.

Designated hitter Austin Watters led off with a walk and Luke Klocek followed it up with a bunt single. Following a foul out by Cole Trezek, McCullough worked a walk to load the bases, all against Moore who came in to close out the game. The Seahawks then hooked Moore in favor of Meadows, while Flores came into the game to hit for Sean Isaac. Flores worked the count to 1-1 and then lined an outside fastball into shallow right-center to bring in the winning runs.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series Saturday at noon from L.A. Harbor before the Warriors begin a quick two-game nonconference series against Barstow.

TORRANCE, Calif. – Third baseman Cole Trezek hit his third homerun of the season and second baseman Brice Savage pushed his batting average to .403 as the No. 7 Warriors shutout Cerritos 4-0 in a South Coast Conference game Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.

Trezek got the Warriors (15-7, 4-5) on the board in the bottom of the 2nd when he blasted a 3-1 fastball over the right field fence. Savage followed a few batters later with a two-out triple to deep center that drove in catcher Justin McCollough for the only runs the Warriors would need. McCollough finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Trezek finished the game 1-for-3 while Savage added a double in the bottom of the 8th to finish the day 2-for-4 with one RBI. Savage leads the team with 29 hits, three triples, five doubles and 20 RBIs.

Sophomore Drew Freeman (4-3) was stellar on the mound for the Warriors. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowed five hits and struck out seven without issuing a walk. Daniel Timmerman locked down the victory, pitching two innings of perfect relief as he allowed no hits and struck out one.

The Warriors added two runs in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to a Falcons fielding error and two bases loaded walks. Falcons starter Jon Villapando went just two innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Reliever Jared Gibson fared no better, pitching two thirds of an inning and allowed two unearned runs before Kyle Harper came in to pitch the rest of the game. He shut down the Warriors offense, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out two, but by then it was too late.

The Warriors will start a crucial three-game series Tuesday when they travel to L.A. Harbor in hopes of getting their SCC record above .500.

TORRANCE, Calif. – Second baseman Brice Savage went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the No. 8 Warriors to a 11-4 South Coast Conference victory over No. 9 Mount San Antonio Thursday at Warrior Field.

The win snapped the Warriors (13-5, 2-3) three-game losing streak and moved them into a tie for 5th place in the conference. During the losing streak, the Warriors offense struggled to get anything going as they averaged just over 1.5 runs a game.

Sophomore Alex Mistuloff (5-1) pitched seven innings, surrendering one run on seven hits. Daniel Timmerman pitched the last two innings in relief. He held the Mounties (12-6, 3-2) without a hit and allowed just one unearned run.

Savage, who leads the team in batting average, helped get things started in the bottom of the third with the Warriors down 1-0. He singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and came around to tie the game on a two-out single by designated hitter Austin Watters. The Warriors added another run in the inning to take the lead and never looked back.

Savage, who also had a double, blasted a leadoff homerun deep over the left field wall to lead off the bottom of the 8th inning off relief pitcher Steven Baltierra to cap off his perfect day at the plate.

(Box Score)

TORRANCE, Calif. – The No. 7 Warriors managed just two hits through the first seven innings and never recovered, dropping a 4-1 South Coast Conference decision to No. 20 East Los Angeles Thursday at Warrior Field.

Starting pitcher Alex Mistuloff (4-1) had a quality start for the Warriors (12-3, 1-1) as he surrendered three runs, two earned, in seven innings. He gave up eight hits and struck out six.

Huskies (6-8, 1-1) starter Juan Vera (2-3) baffled the Warriors hitters for more than seven innings before giving way to Leonard De La Rosa, who closed it out to earn his second save of the season.

The two teams were deadlocked going into the top of the 3rd, but the Huskies scratched out two runs on four singles, two of which were infield hits. They added another run in the top of the 4th and one in the top of the 8th, which was more than enough for Vera. He went 7.2 innings, scattered four hits and allowed one run. He struck out three.

The Warriors finally got on the board in the bottom of the 8th thanks to a sacrifice fly by left fielder Johnny Palmer, bringing in third baseman Cole Trezek. But shortstop Pete Ives grounded out to second with two on to end the threat. It was the only inning in which the Warriors had more than one baserunner.

The teams will play the final game of their three-game series Saturday at noon at Cal State L.A.

TORRANCE, Calif. – In their last game against L.A. Mission, the Warriors used a couple of big innings late in the game to break the game open in an 11-2 victory. On Friday against Imprerial Valley, the Warriors did not wait that long to put the game away.

Austin Watters (West Torrance) had two hits and scored twice in the nine-run second inning, finishing the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Ronnie Galosic also had a huge day at the plate from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI.

The Warriors actually trailed going into their huge inning after surrendering two runs in the top half. With two out and no one on, the visitors started a rally against starting pitcher Drew Freeman beginning with left fielder Trevor Robinson getting hit by a pitch. Chris Gonzalez followed that with a double down the left field line to advance Robinson to third base and catcher Bobby Moreno blooped a single between Warriors first baseman Sean Isaac (Mira Costa) and right fielder Luke Klocek (West Torrance) to drive in the two runs.

Freeman (3-1) settled down after being spotted a seven-run lead in the bottom half, going seven innings for his third win of the year. He scattered eight hits, walked three and struck out five. Daniel Timmerman pitched a flawless eighth and ninth to secure the win.

The Warriors will begin a two-game series against Santa Barbara on Feb. 28 at Warrior Field with freshman Rafael Ramirez slated to start the first game.

Trezek, Klocek Homer In Win Over Irvine Valley

February 17, 2012

B. Savage

(Box Score)

TORRANCE, Calif. – Third baseman Cole Trezek and outfielder Luke Klocek each hit their first homerun of the season to help the Warriors defeat visiting Irvine Valley 6-4 Thursday at Warrior Field at El Camino College.

The Warriors (6-1) won their fifth consecutive game thanks to stellar starting pitching from sophomore Alex Mistuloff (2-0) who went eight strong innings to earn his second victory of the season. He surrendered just one hit through the first eight innings before running into trouble in the ninth. He was charged with four runs, three earned, on five hits, striking out seven.

Collin Nelson relieved Mistuloff in the ninth to get the save, but it wasn’t easy. The freshman out of West Torrance entered facing a two-on, no-out jam. He surrendered a sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Brian Glynn for the first out. Shortstop Enzio Perez then came up and promptly blooped a single between the first baseman and right fielder to put the tying run on base, but Nelson responded by getting pinch hitter Sam Kim to ground into a game-ending double play to Warriors shortstop Peter Ives.

Sophomore and former Mater Dei pitcher Mickey Dunleavy took the loss for the Lasers (4-4), going seven innings and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out six.

The Warriors scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a long, one-out single by Austin Watters followed by an RBI double by first baseman Sean Isaac. The Lasers responded in the top of the third with a run of their own, but the Warriors retook the thanks to an RBI groundout from Klocek.

The Warriors added a run in the bottom of the sixth and then, one inning later, Klocek muscled a homerun over the right field fence to give the Warriors a 4-1 cushion. It was Klocek’s only hit of the game.

Not to be outdone, Trezek came up in the bottom of the eight with a man on and deposited a first-pitch fastball over that same right field fence for a two-run blast. He finished the day 2-for-3.

The teams will meet once more at Irvine Valley on Saturday at noon.

Warriors Sweep Antelope Valley

February 13, 2012

C. Trezek

The Warriors opened the season splitting their first two games of the season. Last week against Antelope Valley, they were in no mood to lose.

The team opened up their series against the Marauders with a 6-2 victory at Antelope Valley on Feb. 8. The Warriors offense only improved from there.

On Feb. 10, first baseman Sean Isaac and second baseman Brice Savage combined to drive in seven runs to help the Warriors rout Antelope Valley 11-4 at Warrior Field in El Camino College.

Savage followed a solid performance on Wednesday against the Marauders with another solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, four RBI and one run scored. In the first two games against the Marauders, Savage went 5-for-7 and drove in seven runs. Isaac also had a great day for the Warriors (3-1), going 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three RBI.

Pitcher Alex Mistuloff (1-0) went six innings for the Warriors, striking out five batters on his way to his first victory of the season. Jess Simpson came in and recorded a three-inning save, allowing just one hit while striking out five.

The Warriors fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning after Mistuloff gave up a one-out double and followed that up by surrendering a mammoth two-run home run to Steven Tremlin. The Marauders added two more runs in the inning, but the Warriors pitchers kept the opposition’s bats quiet for the rest of the afternoon.

The Warriors clawed back to tie the game with two runs in their half of the first followed by two more in the third inning. Then, in the sixth, the Warriors bats woke up as the team batted around and pushed six runs across the plate to seize control of the game.

The Warriors closed out their series on Feb. 11 with another rout, this time dropping the Marauders 13-2. Pitcher Drew Freeman bounced back after a rocky outing in his first start of the season, as he surrendered one earned run on five hits in six innings of work, striking out five.

Warriors Need Extras To Beat Canyons

February 6, 2012

(Box Score)

TORRANCE, Calif. – Sophomore catcher Marvin Flores brought in the game-winning run on a throwing error as the Warriors defeated College of the Canyons 2-1 in 10 innings Friday at Warrior Field at El Camino College.

The Warriors (1-0) won their season opener thanks to stellar pitching. Sophomore starter Alex Mistulof (Redondo) went seven strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He walked only two while striking out nine.

Freshman Collin Nelson (1-0) continued the magnificent hurling for the Warriors, going three innings in relief to get the victory. Nelson shut out the visiting Cougars, allowed just two hits and struck out four.

The Warriors had five hits in the first five innings, but the offense shut down until the 10th when Flores drilled a two-out single to left field. Klocek followed by lining a base hit to center field, advancing Flores to third to give the Warriors a chance to win the game.

Cole Trezek then hit a seemingly routine groundball to shortstop, but Cougars freshman Garrett Fedor (Mira Costa) could not handle it cleanly and then air-mailed his throw over first baseman Jake Jelmini (Mira Costa) to allow Flores to score the winning run.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the third inning when Daniel Timmerman (West Torrance) scored on an RBI groundout by Luke Klocek. The Cougars tied the game in the top of the seventh inning on sophomore infielder Adam Bouyer’s two-out RBI single.

Shortstop Pete Ives was one of few players who had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three singles.

The Cougars (0-1) were led on the mound by sophomore John Salas, who gave up one unearned run in six-plus innings of work. He surrendered five hits and three walks while striking out two. Reliever Icezack Fleming (0-1) took the loss despite giving up just two hits in three innings of relief, striking out three.

Bouyer paced the offense for the Cougars, going 2-for-4 with the team’s lone RBI. Jelmini was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored and left fielder Michael Browne was 1-for-4.
