W. Basketball: Kung Perfect As Warriors Hammer Compton
February 6, 2012
TORRANCE, Calif. – Freshman Kaitlyn Kung (West Torrance) scored 19 points as the Warriors snapped a two-game skid with a 78-45 South Coast Conference victory over visiting ECC Compton Center Friday night at the El Camino College North Gym.
Kung had her best game of the season, going 6-for-6 for the game including 5-for-5 from beyond the arc. She also sank both her free throws to complete her flawless night. Christianna Willis was the only other player to connect from long distance, sinking two 3-pointers on her way to 14 points.
The Warriors (12-10, 5-8) struggled early, trailing 19-14 midway through the first half. But the team went on a 22-2 run to close out the half and they never looked back. Center Caitlin Kyle proved to be a key to the Warriors success in the period, scoring seven of her 14 points in the first half. She added six rebounds and five blocks.
The team’s ball movement was stellar as the Warriors assisted on 27 of their 31 field goals. Point guard Amanda Young (Torrance) led the team with nine assists and freshman Kelsey Ishigo dished out seven dimes of her own.
Other standouts for the Warriors included sophomore Kristen Dresser (North Torrance) who dropped 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds while coming off the bench. Ryann Drear, the team’s scoring leader this season, had just eight points but she showed why she is also the Warriors leading rebounder as she pulled down a team-high 12 boards.
For the Tartars (1-15, 1-9), sophomore Evelyn Sanchez...(read more)
Baseball: Warriors Need Extras To Beat Canyons
February 6, 2012
TORRANCE, Calif. – Sophomore catcher Marvin Flores brought in the game-winning run on a throwing error as the Warriors defeated College of the Canyons 2-1 in 10 innings Friday at Warrior Field at El Camino College.
The Warriors (1-0) won their season opener thanks to stellar pitching. Sophomore starter Alex Mistulof (Redondo) went seven strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He walked only two while striking out nine.
Freshman Collin Nelson (1-0) continued the magnificent hurling for the Warriors, going three innings in relief to get the victory. Nelson shut out the visiting Cougars, allowed just two hits and struck out four.
The Warriors had five hits in the first five innings, but the offense shut down until the 10th when Flores drilled a two-out single to left field. Klocek followed by lining a base hit to center field, advancing Flores to third to give the Warriors a chance to win the game.
Cole Trezek then hit a seemingly routine groundball to shortstop, but Cougars freshman Garrett Fedor (Mira Costa) could not handle it cleanly and then air-mailed his throw over first baseman Jake Jelmini (Mira Costa) to allow Flores to score the winning run.
The Warriors opened the scoring in the third inning when Daniel Timmerman (West Torrance) scored on an RBI groundout by Luke Klocek. The Cougars tied the game in the top of the seventh inning on sophomore infielder...(read more)
W. Tennis: Warriors Rally For Comeback Win Over Fullerton
February 2, 2012
TORRANCE, Calif. – The El Camino College women’s tennis team got its season started on the right track as they rallied for a 5-4 victory over visiting Fullerton College Thursday at the ECC Tennis Courts.
The Warriors (1-0) trailed 4-2 after the singles portion of the match after sophomore Fiat Tapaneeyakorn (Redondo Union) dropped a tough match against Monique Fitchett in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-7.
That left the match in the hands of the doubles teams and they rose to the occasion. The No. 3 team of Jessica Castile (South Torrance) and Sara Carranza (Narbonne) were the first team to take care of business for the Warriors, taking down the team of Fitchett and Bianca Pulido, 6-2, 6-1.
The No. 2 team of Karin Endo and Ashley Guerrero then gutted out a straight-set victory over Rachel Kronenfeld and Andrea Zavala, 7-6, 6-3. They concluded their match just before the No. 1 team of Chun Young Shin and Lindsay Guardado (Torrance) completed a miraculous comeback to seal the win for the Warriors...(read more)
